Start Small
Don't try to contact the Susan G. Komen Foundation, for example, as your first candle fund raiser! This organization is HUGE, and hires professional fundraisers at the national level. You will need to start at a much smaller level.
There are two reasons why you need to start small.
First, you have never held a fundraiser, and you want to make sure everything runs smoothly. My first fundraiser was for my son! He needed to raise money for a band trip he was taking, and thought the raffle the band came up with was one of the lamest fund raiser ideas he had ever heard of!
Second, you have never held a fundraiser!!! It is so much easier to start small and work your way up to larger organizations than the other way around!
Start Early
Most organizations plan their fund raisers months or even a year ahead of the time they hold them. Don't expect to contact an organization today and start a fund raiser tomorrow! Even easy fundraisers like the one I held for my son took organization. I needed to get a fund raising packet together for him. At a minimum you will need a manilla envelope or something similar, catalogs or sales flyers, order forms, pens, receipts, and a money envelope.
Know Your Product
Organizations will want to know why they should hold a fundraiser with your products. Some products are universal and others are more geared to one particular group of people.
